Why ChatGPT and Google AI Never Recommend Your Business, And How to Fix It in 30 Days

Webmarksy Team29 October 202610 min read

Your customer no longer asks Google for 10 blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode a full question, and they act on the short list it returns.

If your business is not named in that answer, you do not lose a click. You lose the lead, before the customer ever sees your website.

That is the shift behind GEO, short for generative engine optimization. It is not a replacement for SEO. It is the next layer on top of it, for a search world where answers come first and links come second.

This guide shows where AI visibility is won, and the 30 day system Webmarksy uses to fix it. If you want the short version, book a free AI visibility check and we will tell you honestly where you stand.

The numbers that change the decision

Zero click searches in the United States rose from 60.45 percent in 2024 to 68.01 percent in early 2026, according to SparkToro and Similarweb data cited by Search Engine Land. Roughly 2 out of 3 searches now end without a click.

An October 2026 SEO brief reported that fewer than 20 percent of number 1 ranking pages also appear in AI answers. Ranking first and being cited are now two different wins.

The same reporting noted that 91 percent of AI citations appear in only one of ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. A brand that shows up in one engine can be invisible in the next.

Social and industry discussion in October 2026 reported that 69 percent of consumers use AI to compare product options, 31 percent search using images, video or voice, and 19 percent start shopping journeys directly inside standalone AI apps.

Read those numbers together and the conclusion is simple. Visibility is no longer one ranking on one search engine. It is being named, with a citation, across several answer engines, for the exact questions buyers ask before they buy.

Why Google AI Mode changed the test

On 13 October 2026, Google made Gemini 4 Argon available in AI Mode for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google says the model handles multi step tasks better and follows instructions more closely across several turns.

For a business, that means one change that matters more than any model name. Queries are now chains, not single questions.

A buyer might start broad, then refine, then narrow again. Example: best web design agency in Pakistan, then with Shopify experience, then with a price under a set budget and work for a UAE client.

Most business websites answer only the first question and stop. The follow up questions, which are often closer to a decision, have no page, no number and no proof to cite. AI then picks a competitor whose page answers all three steps.

Test this yourself in 10 minutes. Run your top 10 customer questions through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Write down, for each question, which businesses get named and which sources get cited. That list is your real visibility report. It is more useful than a rank tracker alone.

How AI actually picks who to recommend

AI does not pick from your homepage design. It picks from retrieval, evidence and consistency.

Retrieval

AI engines pull from web search results, so pages that rank in traditional search still matter. Google Search Central has said normal SEO practices are what get content into AI Overviews. GEO without SEO has no foundation to stand on.

Direct answers

AI prefers pages that answer a specific question in the first sentence below a clear question heading, then support it with specific numbers, conditions, locations and use cases. Vague pages give the model little to match against a precise request.

Proof outside your site

AI cross checks reviews, directories, forums, Reddit discussions, YouTube videos, press mentions and comparison listicles. October 2026 marketing tool analysis found the same pattern repeatedly. AI answers come from listicles, comparisons, Reddit and YouTube, so the work is getting onto those pages, not only tweaking your homepage.

Entity clarity

AI needs to know, without guessing, what you do, where you serve, who you serve and what proof you have. A site that says everything to everyone, with no service pages, no location pages and no case evidence, is hard to recommend with confidence.

If you want a one line test for any page, ask this. Could an AI quote this page, on its own, as a trustworthy answer to one customer question? If the answer is no, the page is not GEO ready, even if it looks good.

The 30 day generative engine optimization system Webmarksy uses

Here is the exact sequence, week by week. It starts with evidence, not guesswork.

WeekFocusWhat you leave with
Week 1AuditCitation gap report
Week 2Answer pagesPages AI can quote
Week 3Outside proofThird party mentions
Week 4MeasurementCitation baseline

Week 1: Audit, not guesswork

List the 20 questions buyers ask before they contact you. Include price, location, timeline, process and comparison questions.

Test those 20 questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Record who is named, who is cited and where you are missing.

Audit your site for the basics that block citation: slow mobile pages, content hidden behind JavaScript only, missing service pages, no FAQ structure, and no clear contact or location information.

Deliverable at the end of week 1: a citation gap report, not a vague audit PDF.

Week 2: Build answer pages that AI can quote

Turn each top question into its own clear section or page, with the question as the heading.

Answer in the first sentence. Follow it with the specific detail a buyer needs to decide: price range, timeline, what is included, what is not included, and who the service is for.

Add a comparison table where buyers compare options. Tables with real numbers are easier for AI to extract than long paragraphs of opinion.

Keep claims checkable. If you say fast, state the load time. If you say experienced, state the number of websites built and show the work.

Webmarksy's homepage is a good model here. It states 200 plus websites built, 50 plus businesses, a 5.0 rating on The Manifest, and a price range, instead of only saying trusted and premium.

Week 3: Prove it outside your website

Fix your Google Business Profile, directory listings and review system first. Inconsistent names, addresses and phone numbers weaken trust signals across engines.

Earn mentions where AI already looks: honest client case studies with real results, useful answers in relevant forums and communities, and comparison content that includes your work because it deserves to be there.

Publish original proof: project photos, before and after results, pricing guides with real ranges, and process explainers that only a team doing the work could write.

Do not buy fake mentions. Google updated its helpful content guidance on 1 October 2026 to call fabricated creator profiles deception, including AI headshots, made up names and false credentials used to simulate human experts. Fake proof is now a trust risk, not a shortcut.

Week 4: Measure citations, not only traffic

Re run the same 20 questions across the same engines. Count named mentions and citations, by engine, not only website visits.

Track which pages get cited and copy that structure to the pages that do not.

Add a Preferred Sources step. On 15 October 2026, Google increased inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, placed them higher in answers, and expanded Preferred Sources. Google reported Preferred Sources usage grew more than 7 times since the start of 2026, and preferred links are clicked about twice as often. Ask happy readers and clients to add your site as a Preferred Source where that option is available.

If citations rise but clicks stay flat, do not panic in week 4. AI visibility often shows up as named mentions and direct enquiries first, because buyers verify by searching your brand name after seeing it in an answer.

Three GEO myths that waste money

Most GEO budgets are lost to three beliefs. Each one sounds reasonable and each one is wrong.

Myth 1: Add an llms.txt file and AI will find you

Reality: Ahrefs looked at about 137,000 domains in May 2026. About 28 percent had published an llms.txt file, yet 97 percent of those files received zero requests. Google has said repeatedly that Search does not use llms.txt. The file is cheap to add, but it belongs at the bottom of a GEO list, not at the top. The work that matters is crawlable content, clear site structure and pages that rank in web search.

Myth 2: SEO is dead, GEO replaced it

Reality: Google said normal SEO practices are what get content into AI Overviews. GEO is a layer on top of SEO. A site that cannot be crawled, indexed and ranked has nothing for AI to retrieve in the first place.

Myth 3: Publish a best agency list that ranks yourself first, and AI will recommend you

Reality: In a study of 100 business to business queries cited in October 2026 GEO research, Google cited a brand own list without recommending that brand in 224 of 323 cases, about 69 percent. Self ranking lists get cited, but they do not reliably get recommended. Real third party proof beats self promotion.

What GEO costs, in honest terms

GEO is not a one page fix and it is not a guaranteed number 1 answer. No honest agency can guarantee a specific AI answer, because engines, models and subscription tiers change the answer for different users.

What you can buy is a system: a question map, quotable answer pages, technical fixes, proof building and citation measurement, repeated every month. That system is worth paying for only if your customers actually ask AI before they buy. For most service businesses in 2026, they now do.

The cost of doing nothing is also measurable. Every month AI answers name your competitors, you are not in the room where the shortlist is made. That is not a traffic problem. That is a sales problem.

Questions people ask about GEO

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting your business named and cited in AI answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. It builds on SEO by making pages easy to retrieve, quote and verify.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. SEO gets your pages crawled, indexed and ranked. GEO turns those pages into answers AI can quote. Without SEO, there is nothing for AI to retrieve.

How long does GEO take?

Expect the first 30 days to produce a baseline, answer pages and technical fixes. Citation changes usually show up after that, and results vary by market, competition and how often AI re crawls your sources.

Can anyone guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. AI answers change by user, location, model and subscription tier. A credible provider promises a repeatable system and measured citations, not a fixed answer.

How do I check if AI recommends my business?

Run your 20 highest intent customer questions through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Record which businesses are named and which sources are cited. That is your baseline.

Free AI Visibility Check from Webmarksy

If you want to know where you stand today, start with evidence, not a sales call.

Send Webmarksy your website URL through the contact form on webmarksy.com, email support@webmarksy.com, or call +92 341 5748311 for a free AI Visibility Check.

You will get a clear answer to three questions: which of your top customer questions already name you in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, which questions name your competitors instead, and what is the first fix that would change that result.

If you are already visible, you will be told that as well. If you are invisible, you will leave with a 30 day plan, not a generic report.

Your next customer is already asking AI who to choose. Make sure the answer includes you.
